The Westerkerk ('western church') is a Protestant church in Amsterdam, built in 1620-1631 after a design by Hendrick de Keyser. The church is right next to Amsterdam's Jordaan district, at the bank of the Prinsengracht canal (...) (from Wikipedia).
This 85 meter tall tower provides those who choose to climb to its top with a great opportunity to view the city's rooftops from above. 187 steps lead to the top, and the climb is uncomfortable, but worth the while. Construction of the church was completed in 1631. Rembrandt, who lived nearby, died penniless and was buried in this church in 1669, in an unmarked poor man's grave. Anne Frank wrote in her diary that she could hear the church bells from her hiding.
