The cathedral of Notre Dame looks sturdy and substantial on the outside, only on the inside does the beauty of this Gothic masterpiece become clear. Pope Alexander III laid the first stone in 1163 and Notre Dame has sat at the center of Parisian affairs ever since. The west and south rose windows are radiant examples of stained glass techniques.
