One of the first things you’ll probably notice about this bridge is that it doesn’t cross the whole river. In fact, it barely juts out into the water. Quite why Le Pont d’Avignon, first built in the 12th century and washed away in the 17th, has become quite so famous remains a mystery. You can pay to visit the bridge, although many find the view from the other side of the river much more rewarding.
