The area around the Hôtel des Invalides doesn’t believe in subtlety. This enormous complex, built for wounded soldiers in the 17th century, also acts as Napoleon’s tomb. France brought his body here from St Helena (19 years after he died) and buried it in the crypt of the golden Dôme Church. The area’s many courtyards and gardens make it a pleasant place to wander around.
