Located in Washington State in the Pacific Northwest corner of the United States, Seattle is a popular city with both residents and tourists. Known to be one of the best places to live in the U.S., an additional nine million tourists plan a trip to Seattle every year.
Undoubtedly, the city’s most iconic landmark is the Space Needle. Opened in 1962 for that year’s World’s Fair, the giant needle features a rotating observation deck and restaurant at 518ft above the city streets. Understandably, it is from here that visitors will find the best views of the city, the Puget Sound, and the region at large. At the foot of the Space Needle sits the Seattle Center, home to the city’s symphony orchestra, opera, and art museum. It also features the EMP Museum, which celebrates modern music, science-fiction and pop culture.
One of the most popular destinations in the entire city is Pike Place Market. An open place market, visitors can get a cavalcade of goods here, including souvenirs, clothes, and fresh caught fish. Pike Place is also the birthplace of Starbucks coffeehouses. The rejuvenated Waterfront District is the place to go to find fantastic restaurants with even better views, while Pacific Place and the Westlake Center are popular shopping haunts.
Seattle has no shortage of tours to enjoy either. Visitors can take in the Boeing plant, where airplanes are built, or the nearby Museum of Flight. Boat trips out on the Puget Sound provide some stunning scenery, while the San Juan Islands make for an enjoyable afternoon. Those with a sense of adventure might even be inclined to take a Duck tour of the city or explore the city’s underground areas.
Travelers planning a trip to Seattle should also consider the region at large. The Olympus mountain range and the Olympic National Park alone are well worth a visit, and the perfect place to get away from the hustle and bustle of the ‘Emerald City’.
