Once one of the largest cities in all the United States, St. Louis may not be as populous today but it hasn’t lost any of its attraction. It’s also reemerging as a popular tourist destination. Those planning a trip to St. Louis via air will touchdown at Lambert-St. Louis International Airport, situated 10 miles northwest of the downtown district. Regular shuttle buses, taxis and other forms of public transport are available to take visitors to the heart of the city.
Once in the city, visitors will find a host of attractions to seek out and enjoy.
Located in eastern Missouri close to the Illinois border, St. Louis is known as “The Gateway to the West”. This is best symbolized by the Gateway Arch, a 192 meter high archway constructed in the 1960s. The arch – which is the largest man-made monument in the United States – looms high above the city, but those daring enough can take a tour to the very top. The reward is some stunning views of the city and beyond.
Back on terra firma, visitors can get a real feel for the outdoors in and around the city. The Saint Louis Zoo, located in Forest Park, offers a wide range of animal exhibits to enjoy, including a petting zoo for younger children. Forest Park – which was constructed for the 1904 World’s Fair – is also home to the Jewel Box, an expansive greenhouse which houses a large variety of flowers. The city also features a number of other parks, including the city’s botanical gardens, which provide suitable backdrops against which to enjoy an afternoon stroll or a bike ride.
Other popular attractions within the city include the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis, which was completed in 1914, and its predecessor the ‘Old Cathedral’, which was the first cathedral to be built west of the Mississippi River.
St. Louis is also home to a variety of museums, including the St. Louis Science Center, the St. Louis Art Museum, and the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis.
Children visiting the city will enjoy the Six Flags St. Louis amusement park, while sports fans putting together a St. Louis trip plan can revel in the likes of Busch Stadium, Scottrade Center, and the Edward Jones Dome, all of which host professional sports teams.
