Nestled between the states of Maryland and Virginia on the East Coast, Washington, D.C. is the capital city of the United States of America. As such, it is a popular choice with visitors from across the globe. High on the list of any Washington, D.C. trip plan is the National Mall, located at the very heart of the city. It is here that visitors can take in a lengthy list of Washington’s most famous landmarks and sites.
Situated at the east end of the National Mall is the United States Capitol building, the home of Congress (the U.S. government). At the west end of the Mall is the Lincoln Memorial, an iconic temple-like structure that honors President Abraham Lincoln.
Between these two lays some of the most remarkable sights in all of Washington. These include the Washington Monument, the largest obelisk in the world, which stands 555 feet high and features an observation deck offering fantastic views of the city; memorials to those lost in the Vietnam, Korean, and World Wars, as well as a number of national wars; the Reflecting Pool; the National Museum of American History; the National Gallery of Art; and the Smithsonian Institution.
Just a short walk from the National Mall stands the White House, the home to the incumbent President since 1801. Of the 15 million or so tourists visiting Washington, almost all will stop to take in this iconic structure.
On the south side of the Potomac River, lies Arlington National Cemetery, the final resting place for 400,000 war veterans and military personnel. While it might seem somewhat macabre to visit a cemetery, Arlington features numerous monuments, including the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, that make it well worth the visit.
Those planning a Washington, D.C. trip plan will find that not all of its attractions relate to politics. Visitors may also enjoy a trip to Georgetown, a historic district that features the oldest Catholic university in the U.S., as well as numerous cafés; the Verizon Center, which hosts sports and entertainment; or the National Zoo, one of the most popular in the country.
