A longtime favorite vacation destination with native Germans, Munich is fast becoming the most popular German city with international travelers also. Some five million tourists plan a Munich trip every year.
Located in the southeast of Germany, in the state of Bavaria, Munich is served by Munich Airport, which can be found north of the city. Visitors can use road or rail to reach the city, while trains, trams, buses, and an underground railway make up the city’s public transport network.
The city has a host of attractions and landmarks for visitors to enjoy. Unquestionably, Munich’s biggest attraction is Oktoberfest, a 16-day festival celebrating beer. Some six million revelers enjoy the festival every year, with many travelling from across the globe. The event runs through the end of September into October.
Beer is big business in this part of the world. The city’s Hofbräuhaus brewery is actually the third most visited attraction in Germany, behind only Cologne Cathedral and the Reichstag building in Berlin. Nearly two million visitors are estimated to visit the brewery each year.
Other popular landmarks and attractions in the city include the Deutsches Museum, which is located on an island on the River Isar, and is the largest science and technology museum in the world; Alte Pinakothek, an art museum that houses work from renowned artists including DaVinci and Rembrandt; and the English Garden, the city’s largest park which includes numerous picturesque settings.
The Frauenkirche, or the Cathedral for Our Blessed Lady, is Munich’s largest place of worship. The goliath structure, which is capable of hosting 20,000 people, has become synonymous with the city. It also features a tower that offers fantastic views of not only Munich, but the Bavarian Alps beyond.
Other attractions worth considering when planning a trip to Munich include Nymphenburg Palace; the Marienplatz (town square), which hosts some of the city’s finest-looking buildings; and the Olympic Park, which hosted the 1972 Olympic Games.
